I'll probably actually take a full semester in the spring though, so I can get my full financial aid. I need 6 hours of American History, 6 of geography, macro economics, and public speaking for my BS anyway. I might as well take 3 of them when Bright Futures is going to pay 100% instead of 75%.
So what have I decided now? I'm going to become a librarian. Yes, yes, laugh if you must. I'm already practicing putting my hair in a bun and giving dirty looks at any sign of noise. Overall it just fits better into the picture I have for my life than being a college level science teacher does. Plus, I need ~3 years less schooling that is also going to be a billion times easier. And the pay isn't really that bad, either. No matter where I chose to live there will be at least a public library, plus one for each school. If I do work at a school library, I'll have almost exactly the same schedule as my kids. Can't say that about colleges employing an oceanography and geology teacher.
The really, really odd thing about becoming a librarian is you still need a masters before you can work most places. I figured when I first starting contemplating this that at most I would need a bachelors. How much could there be to learn about being a librarian? I was only half right.
To get your masters of library science (lawl) you can get any bachelors you want. Then there are only four core courses you need for the masters. Four. You then need 28 credits of electives, as approved by your adviser. At the FSU here it takes about 3 semesters. Calling it a Masters is really some kind of inside joke. It must be.
As for my Bachelors I've decided to go with Social Science Education. This would allow me to teach history, geography, government, economics, psychology and sociology in grades 6-12 in 38 states. It's still teaching, so I can have that as an option if I hate being a librarian or can't find work. Mostly I just picked it because I only needed three classes from GCCC to get my AA (plus trig and ethics I'd need no matter what degree I chose), and I thought it was an area of study I could stand. Even if I never use it in the work field I'll at least be more equipped to help my kids with it in the future.
So instead of my previous schedule of trig, pre calc, chemistry, and ethics, I'll now be taking trig, ethics, tech for teachers, and intro to teaching. Tech for teachers should be easy. It's probably like using word and PowerPoint or something. "This, students, is a dry erase marker. You mark on this dry erase board. And then you can erase it without the help of liquid!" For intro to teaching I actually get to spend 15 hours in a k-12 classroom watching them teach.
Overall I think I am (and will be) happy with this. I was almost happy with my previous major, but the immense amount of math and chemistry and other classes I'm not naturally good at were discouraging. This combines a lot of the reasons I found teaching compelling with a reasonable work load. After all, my main goal in life isn't to be successful in my career, but to focus on my family. I think this will allow me to do that and be a job I can enjoy.
